Tour Overview
The Uros Floating Islands Half Day Tour is a perfect way to see one of Peru’s coolest spots, even if you’re short on time. We’ll cruise across the world’s highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca, and take in some epic views of the water and the surrounding mountains. The vibe is relaxed, fun, and packed with interesting sights and stories.
First, we’ll make our way to the Uros Floating Islands, which are built entirely from totora reeds that grow right on the lake. These islands have been around for over 500 years, and today, local families still live on them. We’ll walk around the islands, check out how the people live, and see their cool reed boats and homes. Our guide will share some awesome history about the islands, how they’re built and maintained, and what life is like here.
While we’re exploring, we’ll have the chance to ask questions, take photos, and interact with the locals. The islands are full of life, and you’ll see how people continue to live in harmony with nature. If you’re up for it, there’s an optional reed boat ride you can take to get an even better view of this unique place. It’s a great way to snap some more photos and experience the islands from a different perspective.
After our visit, we’ll cruise back to Puno, taking in the peaceful scenery as we go. The tour’s short, but it’s a fantastic way to get a taste of Lake Titicaca’s culture and the floating islands without spending a whole day on it. Plus, the relaxed pace makes it easy to fit into any schedule, whether you're just passing through or want a quick adventure.
Tour Itinerary
Uros Floating Islands Half Day Tour
We will begin the Uros Floating Islands Half Day Tour by meeting at the local port in Puno. We will board a comfortable motorboat for the experience. The tour offers three departure times: 09:00 AM, 12:00 noon, or 3:00 PM. We will head out onto the calm waters of Lake Titicaca, gradually leaving the city behind. We will enjoy wide lake views with the Andean plateau as our backdrop. Our local guide will introduce the history, culture, and legends of Lake Titicaca, explaining its importance in Andean cosmology.
After approximately 30 minutes of navigation, we will arrive at the Uros Floating Islands, a remarkable network of man-made islands constructed entirely from totora reeds. The guide will explain the unique construction techniques of these islands and how they are anchored and maintained. We will learn about the Uros people’s resourcefulness in using totora reeds for everything—from the islands themselves to boats, houses, and everyday tools.
We will take a guided walk across the floating islands, observing how daily life is organized. The guide will share stories about the Uros people’s traditions, family structures, and lifestyle on the water. We will witness firsthand how children grow up adapting to this extraordinary environment. We will have time to take photographs and interact respectfully with the residents, gaining a deeper understanding of their culture.
We will also have the opportunity to take a short ride on a traditional totora reed boat. The guide will explain how the islanders craft these boats by hand, offering a unique perspective of the floating islands from the water. This optional experience is a fantastic way to see the islands up close, and it will make for memorable photos and a closer connection to Uros traditions.
Before departing, we will have some free time to explore and browse locally made handicrafts. These handcrafted textiles, miniature reed boats, and embroidered items offer a great way to support the community. Purchasing is optional, and visitors are encouraged to shop at their own pace.
The return boat journey to Puno will provide another chance to appreciate the tranquil beauty of Lake Titicaca. The light and reflections will change depending on the time of day, with crisp morning air or soft afternoon tones. We will arrive back at Puno Port, concluding the tour with a greater appreciation for the rich culture and history of the Uros people and their fascinating floating islands.
